As we all know,long railways are connected by steel rails,and the connecting part between the rails is the Uic54 Fish Plate.There are holes in the UIC54 Fish Plate with Bolts,but careful people will find that these holes are larger in diameter than the bolts,and are oval,why?
In fact,there is a special gap between the rails,about 6mm wide,called the expansion joint.The small oval holes in the rail that allow the steel bolts to pass through the UIC54 fish plate allow room for expansion in hot weather.This is important:without room for expansion,the orbit would have to withstand 1.6 tons of pressure or tension every time the temperature changed one degree.A track may therefore become askew,affecting driving safety.
